History of the Hotel
In the beginning of the twentieth century, the engineer and inhabitant of Uppsala Hjalmar Kallenberg goes to Italy to study the hotel business. Once he was back, he bought a real estate on the east side of the stream Fyrisån, where he had a Grand Hotel Hörnan built according to European standards. In the late winter of 1907, the Grand Hotel Hörnan opens its doors and becomes the largest and most exclusive hotel in Uppsala with 29 rooms. As the first hotel in Uppsala central heating was installed.
The architect who designed the hotel was Ture Stenberg. The style is new baroque and is very characteristic of the time, with features of Art Noveau in the decoration. The façade is plastered in a light colour and has softly bulged gable end roofs, abundantly decorated with ornaments, and the balconies have forged iron railings in wavy shapes. The sloping curb roof, and the tower section with simpler plaster décor inspired by Art Noveau, are also contributing to the magnificence.
During the first decade of the twentieth century, the trade in Uppsala prospers and the hotel market is big. In addition to Grand Hotel Hörnan here are among others Hotel Gillet, the Stadshotel and the hotel Rullan. But in 1911 the hotels of the city get into a crisis, and the decision to merge to achieve large-scale advantages is made. The Uppsala Hotel AB is founded. A common farmyard in Bärby outside Uppsala is, among other things, bought, where meat, eggs and milk are produced for the hotels.
By then, the engineer Kallenberg has already sold his hotel, and the new owner, in his turn, sells it to the joint-stock company, that runs the Grand Hotel Hörnan until year 1933, when a Ms. Eriksson buys the hotel. She gets married, gets the surname Andemo and the Grand Hotel Hörnan is since then run by the same family for three more generations. In 1999 the hotel is sold to the family Bennbom, who still owns and runs the business.
